YPT are the Kyrgyzstan experts and can tailor a trip to fit your needs, timeframe, budget and destination! Below is our example Kyrgyzstan tour. This can be extended or combined with other activities to create independent Kyrgyzstan tours.

Example Kyrgyzstan Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Tajikistan – Lenin Peak

  •  Cross the border point “Kyzyl-Art” from Tajikistan.
  •  The driver will meet you and take you to Lenin Peak Base camp.
  •   Arrival in the base camp of Lenin Peak, 3 600 meters ASL
  • There are other camps at 4,400 meters and 5,300 meters.
  • Accommodation in tent.
  • Dinner at base camp.

Day 2:  Lenin Peak – Peak Petrovskiy

  •  You can trek around the base camp.
  • Peak Petrovskiy is a nearby landmark at 4,800 meters ASL.
  • Accommodation in tent.
  • Dinner at base camp.

Day 3: Peak Petrovskiy – Osh

  •  Transfer to Osh (around 5 hours).
  • Afternoon city tour of Osh, a town which is 3,000 years old.
  • Visit the sacred Sulaiman-Too (Prophet Solomon’s mountain) and Osh bazaar, one of Central Asia’s largest open-air markets.
  • Lunch at café.
  • Free afternoon in Osh

Day 4: Osh – Kazarman Vilage

  •  After breakfast leave for Kazarman Village (6-7 hour drive).
  • Visit Uzgen Tower en route. Lunch en route.
  • Afternoon arrival in Kazarman Village.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in a local home stay.

Day 5: Kazarman – Song-Köl

  •  After breakfast leave for the Song-Köl Lake (3,600 meters ASL) via Moldo-Bel Pass (around 6 hour drive).
  • Lunch en route.
  • Afternoon arrival and welcome by your host family of shepherds.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in a yurt.

Day 6: Song-Köl

  •  Spend the day at the lakeside.
  • Watch and/or participate in the everyday life of the shepherds: milking mares; making traditional Kyrgyz milk products like kymyz (a fermented mare’s milk) or airan (a sour, dense milk product); tending cattle.
  • Optional: horse riding or trekking around.
  • Meals and overnight stay in a yurt.

Day 7: Song-Köl – Bishkek

  •  Breakfast.
  • Leave for Bishkek town (about 300 km, 6-hour drive).
  • On the way, visit the Burana Tower architectural complex (10-11th century, an important point on the Great Silk Road), 15km from the main road.
  • Arrive in Bishkek in the afternoon
  • Hotel accommodation.
  • Short city tour of Bishkek.
  • Farewell dinner.

Day 8: Bishkek

  •  Check out of hotel after breakfast
  • Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Frequently ask Questions about travel to Kyrgyzstan

  • Do I need a visa to visit Kyrgyzstan?

    Kyrgyzstan has recently implemented visa-free regimes for most Western countries. Visa-free nationalities can be found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Kyrgyzstan. A second tier of nationalities can still apply for an e-Visa, but it does incur a cost of about $70; you do not need LOI to get one. If you’re still travelling from a country that doesn’t appear on these lists though, we will organize an LOI for you which will enable you to apply for a visa at your nearest embassy.

  • Is it safe to visit Kyrgyzstan?

    Kyrgyzstan is a safe country with limited personal crime. That being said, like anywhere, pick-pocketing and crime against a person is rare but can happen. It is important to take care with your personal belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. While military clashes have happened along the Tajikistan border, diplomatic relations have improved between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

  • What currency do they use in Kyrgyzstan?

    The currency in Kyrgyzstan is the Kyrgyz Som (KGS). ATMs are only prolific in Bishkek, but you can find them if needed or change other currencies into local currencies. There are plenty in the city, so that is the best opportunity to cash up before leaving the city. There is no black market or other complicating factors, and you can change a broader range of currencies quickly if needed. Some places will even accept credit cards, but just like in the rest of Central Asia, the economy is still largely cash driven.

  • What language do they speak in Kyrgyzstan?

    There are two main languages spoken in Kyrgyzstan – Kyrgyz and Russian. Kyrgyz is a Turkic language of the Kipchak branch spoken in Central Asia. Most people in metropolitan or city areas also speak Russian. There has been a push in recent years for people to speak Kyrgyz, the native language over Russian, however for practicality reasons many people still speak Russian.

  • What is the political situation in Kyrgyzstan?

    Kyrgyzstan has by far the most liberal and open democracy in Central Asia. Elections are held regularly, with several political parties of different persuasions competing for power.

  • What is the food like in Kyrgyzstan?

    The food in Kyrgyzstan is mostly meat based including horse, beef and lamb as the staple of many dishes. In most restaurants, you can also get vegetarian food such as salads and vegetables, however vegan food is almost non-existent.

  • What fitness level should I be to join a tour to Kyrgyzstan?

    One of the highlights of Kyrgyzstan is the outstanding nature. To really enjoy this tour, we recommend being of moderate fitness, able to walk distances of more than a kilometer on uneven tracks. Also, there may be some medium altitude stops that will be above 3,000 meters.
