Oil Wealth and Modern Monarchy Tours
This tour focuses on how Brunei became one of the richest countries in the world due to oil and gas, and how this wealth has shaped a modern but socially unequal society. Explore Bandar Seri Begawan and surrounding areas to see how oil money has transformed a once small sultanate into a wealthy welfare state, with free healthcare, education, and housing for citizens, alongside luxurious royal architecture. At the same time, the tour also looks at the quieter side of the country, where many communities live more modestly and don’t see much of the oil wealth, showing a clear contrast in lifestyles within a small but oil-rich nation. Learn about the role of the Sultan, one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs and one of the richest individuals in the world, whose wealth is closely tied to Brunei’s oil and gas resources.
Borneo Overland Combo Brunei Tour
This tour explores the island of Borneo, combining the unique sultanate of Brunei with the rainforests and cultural diversity of Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo. In Brunei, we visit highlights such as the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, the iconic Kampong Ayer water village where entire communities live on stilts over the river, and the impressive Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, while also learning about the country’s oil wealth and a strict Sharia-influenced legal system. From Brunei, you can combine the neighbouring Malaysian and Indonesian part of Borneo as you wish, to make the most out of your visit on the Borneo island. Get in touch, and we can tailor the perfect itiernary for you and your preferences.
Kampong Ayer Water Civilization Tours
This tour focuses on Kampong Ayer, one of the world’s largest and oldest water settlements, where thousands of people live in stilt houses connected by wooden walkways over the Brunei River. Unlike many reconstructed or tourist-focused floating villages, Kampong Ayer is a fully living community where people continue their daily lives in an authentic setting and is rarely visited by foreigners. Travel by boat through the village like the locals to visit homes, schools, mosques, and local workshops, and learn how this water village functions with modern infrastructure such as electricity, internet, and transport boats. While this floating settlement has these modern facilities, it stands in stark contrast to the wealth and luxury seen on mainland Brunei just across the river in the capital.
