Chad Guerewol Festival Tour

Friday 25th September – N’Djamena

• Arrival at your convenience in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, which is well connected to Addis Ababa, Paris, Istanbul and Cairo, among others.
• Transfer to the hotel with your pre-arranged airport pick-up.
• Overnight stay in N’Djamena.

Saturday 26th September – N’Djamena

• Pre-tour meeting will be held at 9:00apm in the hotel to meet your guide and your fellow travellers.
• After this meeting, we’ll start our full-day city tour of N’Djamena, the capital of the country.
• You’ll have the chance to see the Cathedral (destroyed during the civil war in 1980 but since rebuilt), the Great Mosque, built in 1978, and the local craft centre.
• The National Museum is also on our program. Though many of its artifacts have been lost/looted during the civil war, between 1979 and 1983, it is still an interesting visit and a great way to learn about the arts and traditions of Chad, archaeology, history, paleontology and the Islamic heritage of the country.
• The city tour will also include N’Djamena’s Central Market, where you’ll experience the local culture up close.

Sunday 27th September – N’djamena – Durbali

• After breakfast, we will depart N’Djamena and journey through the vast Sahel towards Durbali. Along the way, we may encounter nomadic tribes moving across the landscape, offering glimpses into their daily lives.
• Upon arrival at our campsite, we will be welcomed by the Wodaabe people as they prepare for the spectacular Guerewol Festival. This celebration marks an important time of gathering for the Wodaabe, known for their rich cultural traditions.
• Overnight stay at our campsite.

Monday 28th September – Guerewol Festival

• Today, we immerse ourselves in the Guerewol Festival, one of the most remarkable cultural events in the Sahel. This annual gathering takes place at the end of the rainy season, bringing together Wodaabe clans after months of nomadic life.
• The festival is a time for courtship, where Wodaabe men adorn themselves with intricate makeup, elaborate jewelry, and feathered headdresses before performing mesmerizing dances to attract potential partners. Among other things, we’ll witness the Yaake dance, where men stand in a line, swaying and moving rhythmically while singing in deep, resonant voices. The competition is intense, as each dancer aims to impress the female judges, who will ultimately select the most attractive and talented among them.
• Beyond the dazzling displays, we will have the opportunity to engage with the Wodaabe, learn about their traditions, and gain a deeper understanding of their way of life.
• As evening falls, the festival atmosphere becomes even more lively, with fires illuminating the desert and music carrying into the night. We will experience firsthand the Wodaabe hospitality, sharing meals and conversations under the vast Sahelian sky.

Tuesday 29th September – Guerewol Festival

• We’ll spend a second full day at the Guerewol Festival, allowing us to witness the festival in its entirety. From the rhythmic chants to the hypnotic dances, we will be surrounded by the energy and passion of this extraordinary event.
• We will observe the transformation process as Wodaabe men meticulously apply their signature makeup. Their eyes are widened, teeth are brightened, and movements are exaggerated – all designed to showcase their beauty and charm.
• Throughout the day, we will also explore the customs and social dynamics that shape this fascinating festival.
• Overnight stay at our campsite.

Wednesday 30th September – Durbali – N’djamena

• As the sun rises over the festival grounds, we take in our final moments of this extraordinary cultural gathering. We say our goodbyes to the Wodaabe, wishing them well as their celebrations continue. The Guerewol is not just a festival but a significant social event that strengthens community bonds.
• We then begin our return journey to N’Djamena, driving through the arid, sparsely populated Sahel. Along the way, we may encounter Fulani cattle herders guiding their livestock, small roadside markets, and remnants of ancient trade routes that once connected empires.
• We will make stops for refreshments and photographs, soaking in the scenery before arriving back in N’Djamena in the late afternoon.
• Dinner at a restaurant featuring Chadian cuisine, where dishes like daraba (peanut and okra stew) and grilled fish from the Chari River can be enjoyed.
• Overnight stay at N’djamena.

Thursday 1st October – N’djamena

• Breakfast at hotel
