Join YPT for full-on exploration of one of China’s wildest province, the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.
This tour was first conceived as a prequel to our Mongolia Naadam Festival tour. This will allow you to connect from Mainland China to Ulaanbaatar with Group B, while taking in the most fascinating sites of Inner Mongolia before you entering Mongolia.
Your tour with us begins in Ordos, China’s most infamous ghost city. If you’ve ever spent any time in a Chinese city you’ll be well used to the throng, walking the night markets where it seems like every conceivable snack is on offer or pushing your way through people trying to sell you things outside train stations. Kangbashi is different, and it is almost a welcome novelty having almost a whole city square, a hospital, train station or apartment complex to ourselves.
You can explore half-finished mansion complexes and residential buildings, empty hospitals and museums as well as the huge 80,000-seater stadium with not a soul around. Climbing the sand dunes with empty apartment blocks looming behind allows you to marvel about the otherworldly scenery. The surreal landscape often reminds of a sci-fi movie.
Kangbashi is not an abandoned city but a new city waiting for people to come, and you can have the freedom to explore the city as you like, with our YPT guide and local driver ready to check out any new places that catch the eye.
But that is not everything: we will venture out and sleep in yurts in the desert, ride through the vast grasslands, and explore Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. All of this leads us to the legendary overnight trains connecting to Ulaanbaatar.
Tour Highlight
Explore an entire Ghost City with half-finished and abandoned mansion complexes, hotels and other buildings that vary from a post-apocalyptic to a space-age futuristic feel.
Sleep in traditional yurts in the vast Mongolian grasslands, while experiencing legendary horseback rides, and other ceremonies under the starry desert sky.
Go full Mongolian with food and milk alcohol as a break from exploring the random structures that spring up in the countryside around the Genghis Khan Mausoleum.
