Join us in the Republic of Dagestan, one of the Russian Federation’s most fascinating and least understood republics. Long overshadowed by its neighbours and endlessly misunderstood from the outside, Dagestan was once a classic Soviet-era travel destination. Famed for its stunning mountain scenery, ancient highland villages, and a culture of hospitality that’s as intense as the landscapes themselves.
Located in the North Caucasus and running from the high mountains all the way down to the Caspian Sea, Dagestan is Russia’s most ethnically diverse republic and easily one of its most complex. Dozens of ethnic groups call this place home, the majority Muslim, with a history forged by fiercely independent mountain life, imperial rule, and the messy realities of the post-Soviet era.
Your journey with us kicks off in the republic’s capital, Makhachkala, before heading east into Dagestan’s backroads. Along the way we’ll explore ancient fortresses and timeworn villages that feel far closer to the Middle East than to Moscow, sit down to eat with locals, and of course, go hunting for forgotten Soviet relics that most visitors never see.
One of the standout highlights is our visit to the shores of the Caspian Sea to see the legendary Lun-class Ekranoplan, better known as the Caspian Sea Monster. This absurdly oversized Soviet experiment from the 1980s was a ground effect military vehicle designed to skim just above the water at speeds of around 500 km/h while carrying missiles. Only one was ever completed, and yes, it's ours to explore.
Want to keep going? Roll straight on with YPT by joining our Chechnya & North Caucasus Uncovered Tour, followed by the South Ossetia Independence Day and Abkhazia Independence Day tours, all running back-to-back after this trip.
