Do I need a visa to travel to Algeria?

A visa is required for most travelers to enter Algeria. It must be obtained in advance from an Algerian embassy or consulate from your home country or where you reside. Proof of residency will be required to show. To apply for your visa, you need a letter of invitation. It is advised to contact your embassy in advance to find out what documents they require. Once the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved your application, they will inform your embassy. You may then collect your passport with the visa attached, or if your embassy allows it, they can post it back to you.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Algeria?

Algeria has implemented a visa-on-arrival policy specifically for tourists visiting the southern regions of the country, like Tamanrasset, Djanet, and Tassili N’Ajjer National Park. This applies if you are part of an organized tour through an accredited travel agency, which is the case on our group tour. When you secure your spot on our tour, we will send you an authorization form to fill out. Once we receive it, we will take care of the rest. We will send you a visa form 1-2 months before your tour start date.

Is it safe to travel to Algeria?

Cities like Algiers, Oran, and Constantine are generally safe for tourists. There’s a visible police presence, and security measures are in place to protect visitors and residents alike. The safety level drops significantly near the borders with Libya, Tunisia, Niger, Mali, and Mauritania. Travel warnings often advise against non- essential travel to these regions. Petty Crime is not uncommon in urban areas, including pickpocketing and scams targeting tourists. However, violent crime against foreigners is relatively low compared to some other countries. As always, travellers are advised to remain vigilant, keep a low profile, avoid displaying wealth, and be cautious at night.

Can I use my credit cards in Algeria?

ATMs are rare and credit cards are not widely accepted in Algeria. You will need to bring cash with you. The most accepted foreign currencies are USD and EUR, with the Euro generally getting a better rate. The Algerian Dinar (DA) has an official exchange rate, but a black-market rate also exists. The black-market rate (257 dinars to 1 euro as of January 2025) is much preferable to the official rate (141 dinars to 1 euro) and there is no risk when exchanging money on the black market. Please prepare clean, crisp, new notes of the currency you choose to exchange. Any note with folds, stamps, stains, writing or tears won’t be accepted.

Can I stay connected in Algeria?

Decent Wi-Fi is available at hotels and most restaurants. Is Algeria vegetarian-friendly?

Traveling as a vegetarian in Algeria can present some challenges, but it’s not impossible. Algerian cuisine is predominantly meat-based with dishes like couscous, tajines, and grilled meats being staples. Lamb, beef, and chicken are commonly used. Traditional vegetarian dishes do exist, but they might not be the focal point of meals. Various salads, like “shakshouka” (without eggs), and “matbucha”(a cooked tomato and pepper salad), can be vegetarian-friendly. Plain couscous can also be served with vegetable broths or stews. Asking for “couscous de légumes” (vegetable couscous) can be a good option. The main challenge is that in many restaurants, especially outside major cities or tourist areas, the menu might be heavily meat-focused with few or no explicit vegetarian dishes.

Is Algeria LGBT-friendly?

Algeria is not considered an LGBT-friendly country based on both legal and societal perspectives. Homosexual acts are illegal in Algeria, with penalties including imprisonment from 6 months to 3 years and fines. There’s censorship on LGBT issues, with laws against public decency or morality often used to restrict or criminalize expressions of homosexuality or transgender identity. The societal attitude towards the LGBT community is predominantly negative, with widespread discrimination. This can manifest in various forms, including harassment and violence. For LGBT travelers, caution is advised. Public displays of affection or openly identifying as LGBT can lead to legal repercussions or social backlash. Discretion is highly recommended.

What languages are spoken in Algeria?
